When It’s Time To Quit

We always hear: don’t give up! but is that the full story?

Jackson Simmer

Why is there such an emphasis on not giving up?

It’s all about consistency right?

I believe it’s about way more than that. It’s about doing what you love.

If that were the case, why would anybody have to tell someone else that they shouldn’t quit. I mean why even put it into question.

If someone is doing what they love, what they were meant to do, what they were put on this earth to do, then why would anyone ever say that they shouldn’t quit. Would they even have doubts?

Maybe doubts are the reason that they should reevaluate what they’re doing. No kid, no child, who’s doing something they love, like playing with trains or video games, ever questions what they’re doing. But suddenly, when you’re an adult, it becomes way more complicated? You start hesitating? You start wondering if what you’re doing is right?

Next thing you know you need someone else, another person, to tell you what to do, and what to think and not think. Yes, I’m talking about how telling someone “don’t give up” is like telling them that they had a doubt in the first place.

Nobody who is doing what they love ever has the temptation to quit. It’s only when you’re doing something you don’t really like (you’re putting up with it) that you actually decide that you should maybe doubt yourself, look for other avenues, or just quit altogether.

You start asking around, you start attending conferences of other industries, you start googling stuff that doesn’t have to do with what you do, out of “curiosity.”

Well, have you ever heard the saying “curiosity killed the cat.”? Sounds pretty sketchy to me.

It’s not so much that curiosity is bad for me, just that when it gets to the point where new ideas come to mind, and these ideas are confronting the old ones that have served you well, then maybe it’s time to reevaluate what you were doing in the first place.

Don’t succumb to temptation… to procrastination… Fiddling about between the thing you’re not completely satisfied doing and the thing that you most certainly be doing.

Don’t let fear get in the way. Just hop on the next thing, the thing that excites you, and learn to fly on the way down.
