Being obsessed can be a good thing until it becomes just too much.

Christian Diokno

When you’re obsessed with something, you can focus on it fully — a good thing.

When you’re obsessed with something, the creativity that makes your projects thrive is all there. You have more faculties geared towards it because you’re giving it your all. It’s what you rather be doing. It’s your best choice. And it’s what is the sole focus of your attention.

An obsession doesn’t just happen in the moment. It makes its way into anything and everything you do. Even after you’ve stopped doing the thing you’re obsessed about altogether. It’s there when you wake up, and it’s there when you fall back asleep again. It’s almost like you’ve tuned your body and soul towards that thing that is now consuming your whole mind.

The thing with positive obsessions is that they bear fruit. When human beings get obsessed with something, it’s usually for a good cause — like bettering yourself or making yourself happier.

The thing is that all is fine and dandy until that same emotion, that addiction to your work, that obsession with your new love fling, transfers into something negative. It transfers into something that you shouldn’t be obsessed about. Something that you should ignore altogether.

When the same obsessive emotion is used to obsess (sorry) over something that you should leave out of your life altogether. That’s when things start to get interesting. That’s when things start to “degringolate.”

The thing with the emotion of obsession is that it never stops, and you can’t control it. When you're obsessed with something, you can become “un-obsessed.” You have to replace it with something else. And pray that the new thing doesn’t become an unhealthy obsession as well.

Playing with the emotion of obsession can be dangerous. That’s why it’s so good when obsessed with something positive, and so bad when obsessed with something negative.

The purpose of this post today is to remind people that obsession is not the be-all-end-all of emotions. And obsessions come and go. So enjoy them while you can. Because at the end of the day, if you’re obsessed with something, it’s for a reason, and you’ve been blessed with your opportunity to sink your teeth in it wholeheartedly.

Cheers,

Alex
