Feeling guilty for something you didn’t do

I don’t usually touch upon these subjects because it is in the realm of psychology.

But as a student of psychology myself, I tend to think a lot about these things: feelings. Now I know thinking about feelings is not the most fun activity but sometimes you gotta.

The worst though is when you feel guilty, and even worse when you feel guilty about something you didn’t do: unjustified guilt.

This may not classify as a mental disorder, but in my opinion it can be well close to one. Here’s what I mean. If you feel guilty about something you didn’t do you are increasing your cognitive load (how much you can take during the day, mental “armor”) and that makes it more difficult to do other things.

You can see how when things are more difficult to do, and you feel even less like doing them, it makes it hard to do anything at all!

Unjustified guilt is poison to each and every one of us, and as a society, it IS an epidemic. Just think of everyone struggling with something: weight loss, finances, popularity… you’ll see that somewhere unjustified guilt played a part in their situation.

Let’s fix this one asap.
